What is IUI?

Understanding IUI

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment in which specially prepared, high-quality sperm are placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation — giving sperm a shorter distance to travel to the egg.

It's a simpler, less invasive procedure than IVF, often recommended as a first line of treatment for couples with mild fertility challenges, and can be done with or without ovulation-stimulating medication.

At Sanjeevini, every IUI cycle is closely monitored with ultrasound and hormone tracking, so timing is precise and your chances of success are optimized.

IUI Journey

How treatment works, step by step

From your first scan to your pregnancy test, here's what to expect during an IUI cycle at Sanjeevini.

Ovulation Monitoring

Tracking your fertile window

Regular ultrasounds and hormone tests track follicle growth, with or without mild ovulation-stimulating medication, to identify the ideal day for insemination.

Trigger & Timing

Precisely timing ovulation

Once the lead follicle is mature, a trigger injection is given to induce ovulation, and the IUI procedure is scheduled 24–36 hours later for optimal timing.

Sperm Preparation

Selecting the healthiest sperm

The sperm sample is washed and concentrated in our lab to isolate the most active, healthy sperm, removing seminal fluid and debris before insemination.

The IUI Procedure

A quick, painless insertion

Using a thin, flexible catheter, the prepared sperm sample is placed directly into the uterus — a simple 15–20 minute procedure needing no anaesthesia.

Pregnancy Test

The two-week wait

A beta hCG blood test around 14 days after the procedure confirms whether the cycle was successful, with our team supporting you throughout the wait.

Who May Benefit From IUI?

Is IUI right for you?

IUI is often the first treatment recommended for couples facing these fertility challenges. A consultation with our team will confirm whether it's suitable for you.

Mild Male Factor Infertility

Slightly low sperm count or motility can be addressed by concentrating the healthiest sperm before insemination.

Unexplained Infertility

When no clear cause is found, IUI is often tried first as a simpler, lower-cost option before IVF.

Ovulation Disorders

Irregular ovulation can be corrected with medication, combined with precisely timed insemination.

Cervical Factor Infertility

IUI bypasses the cervix entirely, helping when cervical mucus makes it hard for sperm to reach the egg.

Mild Endometriosis

Early-stage endometriosis that hasn't affected the tubes may still respond well to IUI treatment.

Using Donor Sperm

Single women or couples using donor sperm can conceive through a straightforward IUI procedure.

IUI vs IVF

Which treatment is right for you?

Both are proven fertility treatments — the right one depends on your diagnosis, age and treatment history. Here's how they compare.

Simpler & First-Line

IUI

  • Procedure: Sperm placed inside the uterus; fertilization happens naturally
  • Invasiveness: Minimal — no sedation, no surgery
  • Timeline: One menstrual cycle, 15–20 minute procedure
  • Best suited for: Mild male factor, unexplained infertility, cervical factor, donor sperm
  • Cost: Lower cost per cycle than IVF
Advanced & Higher Success

IVF

  • Procedure: Egg fertilized with sperm in a lab, embryo transferred to uterus
  • Invasiveness: Egg retrieval under light sedation; embryo transfer is painless
  • Timeline: 4–6 weeks per full cycle
  • Best suited for: Blocked tubes, severe male factor, advanced age, failed IUI cycles
  • Success rate: Generally higher success rate per cycle than IUI
